PDD & AISH Assessments
In Alberta, individuals with disabilities may be eligible for government support programs such as the Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) program and Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH). Both programs require assessments to determine eligibility based on cognitive functioning, adaptive skills, and the impact of a disability on daily life.
A PDD assessment evaluates intellectual ability and adaptive functioning to determine if an individual meets the criteria for developmental disability support services. These services may include assistance with daily living, employment support, and community access programs.
An AISH assessment focuses on whether a disability significantly impairs the individual’s ability to earn a living. This process typically includes cognitive and functional evaluations, along with documentation of how the disability affects independence and financial self-sufficiency.
Comprehensive assessments provide clear, objective data to support applications for PDD and AISH, helping individuals access the services and financial support they need.
Step-by-Step Process for PDD and AISH Assessments
Assessments for the Persons with Developmental Disabilities (PDD) program and the Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped (AISH) program help determine eligibility for government support. These assessments evaluate cognitive abilities, adaptive functioning, and the impact of a disability on daily life.
Step 1: Intake Interview
A discussion with the individual and/or their caregiver to gather background information, review medical and educational history, and understand the specific challenges they face in daily living and employment.
Step 2: Cognitive Assessment
A standardized cognitive test is administered to evaluate intellectual functioning, reasoning abilities, and problem-solving skills. This helps determine if the individual meets the criteria for PDD or if cognitive impairments significantly impact work capacity for AISH.
Step 3: Adaptive Functioning Assessment
For PDD applications, an adaptive functioning assessment is conducted to measure skills in daily living, communication, socialization, and independence. This typically involves caregiver or self-report questionnaires and standardized assessment tools.
Step 4: Data Analysis and Report Preparation
All collected information is reviewed and analyzed. A comprehensive report is prepared, outlining cognitive and functional findings, and addressing the specific eligibility requirements for PDD or AISH.
Step 5: Feedback Session
A meeting is held to review the results and discuss the next steps. If needed, the assessment report can be submitted as supporting documentation for PDD or AISH applications. Additional recommendations for services and supports may also be provided.
This process ensures that individuals and families receive clear, objective information to support their applications and access appropriate services.
