Psycho-Educational Assessments

Is your child experiencing challenges with reading, writing, or math? Maybe a teacher has suggested having your child assessed, and you’re wondering if Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) could be a factor, or if you simply want a clearer understanding of your child’s overall functioning.

A Psycho-Educational Assessment is a comprehensive evaluation that examines three primary areas of your child’s development: cognitive, academic, and social-emotional functioning. This type of assessment provides valuable insights into how your child learns, processes information, and interacts with others, helping to pinpoint any specific areas where they may need support or enrichment.

ADHD Assessments

For Children & Adults

ADHD assessments for both adults and children aim to understand difficulties related to attention, impulse control, and other executive functions. Current research indicates that ADHD is fundamentally a disorder involving executive functions, which are the mental skills that help individuals plan, focus, remember instructions, and manage multiple tasks. For children, ADHD assessments typically involve behavioural observations, parent, teacher, and self questionnaires to gauge attention, working memory, and impulse control. In adults, the process includes a clinical interview, self-report scales, two observer emails, and evaluations of life history, focusing on how symptoms impact daily functioning in areas like work, relationships, and self-management.

Research highlights that individuals with ADHD often experience deficits in working memory, emotional regulation, and the ability to sustain focus—key aspects of executive functioning. Studies also suggest that ADHD symptoms can persist into adulthood, with some shifting or becoming more manageable over time. Overall, ADHD is understood to be a lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder that requires a nuanced assessment approach for accurate diagnosis and effective management across all ages.

calgary gifted testing

Gifted Testing

Determining whether your child qualifies for specialized programs like Westmount Charter School or the Calgary Board of Education's Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) involves a comprehensive assessment of their cognitive abilities. For children aged four and older, gifted testing evaluates five key cognitive domains: Verbal Comprehension, Visual-Spatial Processing, Fluid Reasoning, Working Memory, and Processing Speed. For children aged under four, we can calculate three cognitive domains. These assessments provide insights into your child's intellectual strengths and potential areas for development, assisting parents in making informed decisions about appropriate educational placements. Westmount Charter School requires a Full Scale IQ (FSIQ) or General Ability Index (GAI) score of 130 ± 5 for admission consideration, while the GATE program sets their criteria at FSIQ or GAI of 130 or above.
